Two weeks after promoting last year’s second round pick, J.R. Murphy, from extended spring training to Low-A Charleston, the Yankees have done the same today with last year’s top pick, outfielder Slade Heathcott.
The 19-year-old Texarkana, Texas native was given a $2.2 million signing bonus last year in order to get him to sign with the Yankees rather than honor his commitment to LSU.
Considered to be a true five-tool prospect, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound lefty also pitched in high school, at times hitting 94 mph on the radar gun.
He dealt with several injuries from both baseball and football in high school, including a torn ACL.
