BALTIMORE — The Yankees’ roster shuffling continued Saturday, when infielder Giovanny Urshela was promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to the major leagues and Thairo Estrada was optioned to SWB. He went 0-for-2 in Saturday’s 6-4 win over the Orioles. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth for second baseman Tyler Wade, then stayed in the game at third base.
Urshela, 27, played in 19 games last year for the Blue Jays, who acquired him from the Indians after he was designated for assignment. He was DFA’d by the Blue Jays on June 26 and landed with SWB on Aug. 4. In 27 games Urshela hit .307 (31-for-101) for SWB.
In three big league seasons Urshela has played 150 games (117 starts) at third, 13 at short (nine starts), five at second (three starts) and two at first (no starts).
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees moved Didi Gregorius to the 60-day IL.
The right-handed hitting Urshela has appeared in 167 big league games and has hit .225 with a .589 OPS. Urshela batted .321 (9-for-28) in 11 spring training games with the Yankees after a right Achilles tendon problem cleared up.
Urshela made some changes in his approach during the offseason but wasn’t making them public before Saturday night’s game.
“I made a few changes to the swing and it’s working out right now,’’ said Urshela who went 4-for-9 (.444) in two games this year with SWB.
According to Boone, Urshela is going to play at third, though he wasn’t in Saturday night’s lineup.
“He will probably be in there [Sunday] and will be in there quite a bit,’’ Boone said.
Estrada was recalled from SWB on Thursday when Tulowitzki went on the IL with a left calf issue. He didn’t play in Thursday’s 8-4 victory over the Orioles.
