In an interview with me on Wednesday, Yankees vice president of player development Mark Newman said that David Phelps could be promoted from Double-A Trenton sometime soon.

“He’s been good (with Trenton),” Newman said. “Outstanding fastball command, curveball, slider, changeup, and the good results are obvious on their face.

“Yeah, (a promotion) could happen.”

When he said that, I was thinking in the back of my head that the promotion could come if Dustin Moseley, as was widely expected, was promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre to the majors, as it happened today. That left an opening in the SWB rotation, and Phelps, who was named to the Eastern League’s All-Star team after going 6-0 with a 2.14 ERA with Trenton, was the obvious replacement.

A quick word on Moseley – I couldn’t be happier for a guy to get a shot again in the big leagues. In the few chances I’ve had to deal with him in Scranton this year, he couldn’t have been nicer. And given what he went through last year, including the loss of his close friend, Nick Adenhart, he deserves to catch a few breaks.
