ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The benches cleared at Tropicana Field after Josh Donaldson was nearly hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay right-hander Shawn Armstrong to lead off the top of the second inning of the Yankees’ 2-1 win over the Rays on Sunday.

The situation quickly calmed down, but came two days after Donaldson jawed with Friday’s starter for the Rays, Jeffrey Springs, several times throughout the game.

There is a long history of ill-will between the two teams, with both feeling the other has targeted them in the past.
