It didn’t take long for the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry to get heated.

Tyler Austin smashed his bat and charged the mound after Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly plunked him in retaliation in the top of the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game at Fenway Park. On a 2-1 pitch, Kelly threw at Austin’s back — avenging a late slide Austin made into second base in the third inning that caused both benches to clear — and Austin’s reaction led the teams to storm the field again.

Austin sprinted for Kelly, while being held back by catcher Christian Vazquez, and punches started flying as players from both teams joined in the scuffle.

Austin and Kelly were both ejected from the game. Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin was also tossed for his involvement.

The brawl was uglier than the first time the benches cleared after no action was taken following Austin’s staredown with Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt. Holt apparently took exception to Austin’s slide into the bag on a Tyler Wade grounder to third.

Austin was called out on the play.
