ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Yankees are very diligent about getting players what they believe is proper rest regardless of whom the player is.
So, it wasn’t a shock All-Stars DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres weren’t in the starting lineup for Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Rays, even if it was the final game before the All-Star break.
Aaron Boone didn’t start Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela on Thursday. Friday, Aaron Hicks and Gary Sanchez were on the bench for the first pitch. Saturday was Didi Gregorius’ turn to sit. Unlike Judge, Urshela, Hicks and Sanchez, Gregorius didn’t get into the game he didn’t start.
“Just feel like both those guys needed a day,’’ said Boone, who started Breyvic Valera, who was promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the game, at second, Edwin Encarnacion at first and Urshela at third. LeMahieu and Torres didn’t participate Sunday. “These are guys that we have leaned on heavily. We have been through a really tough stretch of games, going to London. Part of the way we are built is part of our depth. Time and time again we have rested guys and the guys that go in there are not only capable but have played a role in us winning ballgames.’’
Claimed off waivers from the Giants in May, the 27-year-old Valera was hitting .348 with nine homers, 31 RBIs and a .980 OPS in 50 games at Triple-A. He was the choice over Tyler Wade, who started Sunday’s action at SWB hitting .298 in 50 games. He appeared in 20 games for the Yankees this season.
“He is having a great season, so I am excited to plug him in,’’ Boone said of Valera, who went 1-for-3 and was robbed of a hit by Rays first baseman Travis d’Arnaud in the seventh inning.
Wade was critical of being sent to the minors at the end of spring training and Clint Frazier said he didn’t expect to be sent down when the Yankees acquired Edwin Encarnacion in June and took the full 72 hours to report. Mike Tauchman was the choice to replace Giancarlo Stanton when he went on the IL with a sprained right knee on June 26.
“We have based our decisions on what makes the most sense from a 25-man-roster standpoint. There has been no one that we have said, ‘We don’t like his attitude,’ ” Boone said.
With Wade hitting and Frazier still considered by some organizations as having a bat that can help, they could be used as chips to acquire a pitcher or pitchers before the July 31 trade deadline.
