Mariano Rivera said Thursday he is again available to pitch but will skip the All-Star Game to rest his ailing right arm.
“I know that for sure I want to participate and do the best I could but I also want to do what is right,” Rivera said of Tuesday’s event in Phoenix. “And I don’t think that I’m going to be able to go. I don’t think, I know so. I’m not going to go. … Three days will be good to rest.”
Rivera, bothered by biceps soreness above his pitching elbow, was not available to Joe Girardi the past three games in Cleveland.
Rivera said he would be able to go against the Rays, a four-game set that takes the Yankees into the All-Star break which begins Monday.
The 12-time All-Star, who also missed last year’s All-Star game because of injury, said he is about 90 or 95 percent. He acknowledged he’s receiving much more treatment than usual and might need to manage the soreness.
“I felt good. Not 100 percent …,” Rivera said. “Hopefully we have to keep treatment, stay on top of it (the rest of the season) and make sure everything is OK. ”
Angels rookie closer Jordan Walden will replace Rivera on the AL All-Star squad Tuesday in Phoenix.
“It’s never an easy decision. I’m proud, but at the same time you have to be wise. Not taking nothing away from the game, you have to be there for the second half of the year,” Rivera said. “I think it’s a good move.”
Alex Rodriguez, the AL’s starting third baseman, also could skip the All-Star game to rest his bothersome right knee.
