Aaron Boone said he hopes CC Sabathia will be able to face the Red Sox on Sunday night at Yankee Stadium in his first start back from the injured list.
As for who will precede the veteran left-hander against the Yankees’ blood rivals from Boston, the manager said that will depend upon what his team needs out of the bullpen leading into Friday night’s game.
“[Domingo] German will pitch Friday or Saturday, it just depends on what our usage is over the next couple of days,’’ Boone said before the Yankees’ 7-0 win over the Padres on Wednesday at the Stadium. “That makes the most sense because we will probably have another opener situation depending on how [Wednesday] and Thursday unfold. We will make that decision whether we want to do that on Friday or Saturday.’’
J.A. Happ will start the four-game series Thursday night, and if the Yankees value experience in a reliever starting a game, the choice should be Chad Green, who has done that three times this season. Green worked one inning Wednesday, throwing 19 pitches, but that shouldn’t take him out of the mix to start Friday or Saturday.
Green’s previous start as an opener was Monday against the Padres, when he struck out the side, including Manny Machado, in the first inning.
Other candidates are Luis Cessa, Nestor Cortes Jr. and David Hale, but all are better fits to follow the opener rather than to start a game themselves.
Aaron Judge long-tossed in the outfield before the game and seemingly had more strength on his throws than he did last week in Baltimore.
