The Yankees have agreed to a deal with righty Cody Poteet on a contract that will pay him $750,000 if he is in the majors, The Post has learned.
A source said that Poteet, who missed most of last year following Tommy John surgery, passed his physical and the deal will be finalized sometime Thursday.
Because this is a major league deal, Poteet was put on the 40-man roster.
But it is a split contract, so Poteet would be paid $200,000 in the minors.
Poteet pitched for the Marlins in 2021-22, working to a 4.45 ERA in 19 games, including nine starts.
He underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2022, signed a two-year minor league deal with the Royals and only pitched in one minor league game in late September 2023.
Kansas City signed the two-year deal with Poteet hoping to rehab him in 2023 and have him as an option for its major league team in 2024.
The Yankees signed Cody Poteet APBut the Royals had an understanding with Poteet that if he were not selected in the December Rule 5 draft and was not put on the 40-man roster afterward, he could opt out of the second year.
One reason that Kansas City had a full 40-man roster and did not put Poteet on it was that it had taken Matt Sauer from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft.
Poteet, 29, will become part of the Yankees’ depth competition for both the bullpen and rotation.
The Yankees needed to create greater staff depth after including Michael King, Jhony Brito, Drew Thorpe and Randy Vasquez as the key items in a trade for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham, while also losing Mitch Spence to Oakland and Sauer as the first two picks in the Rule 5 draft.
Poteet has all three of his options remaining, so the Yankees can also send him between the majors and minors during the season.
The club also claimed outfielder Bubba Thompson off waivers from the Reds on Thursday, taking a flier on a former first-round pick.
The 25-year-old Thompson, a right-handed hitter who has played all three outfield spots, has hit .242 with a .591 OPS and 22 steals across 92 big-league games with the Rangers.
They designated him for assignment in August, and he was claimed by the Royals before the Reds picked him up off waivers in October, only to DFA him last week.
Thompson has two minor league options remaining, which gives the Yankees some flexibility in carrying him on the 40-man roster. The addition of Thompson put the Yankees at 39 players on their 40-man roster, which will become 40 once the signing of Poteet becomes official.
Known for his speed, Thompson has hit .268 with a .765 OPS and 489 strikeouts in 1,861 plate appearances in the minor leagues.
The Yankees have learned this offseason that prospect Yoendrys Gomez was given the medical clearance to receive a fourth option, The Post has learned.
This is not a minor issue (no pun intended) for the Yankees.
Gomez, one of their better pitching prospects, had exhausted his standard three options last season.
Thus, without alteration, he would have either had to stay on the Yankees’ major league roster all season in 2024 or be subjected to waivers to get him back to the minors.
