It probably is not the solution to the Yankees’ starting pitching problem, but they have signed former Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon to a minor-league contract with an invitation for spring training.

Colon has not pitched in the majors since July 24, 2009, but the 37-year-old pitched this winter in the Dominican League on a team managed by Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, and Yankees scouts liked what they saw enough to sign him.

Colon could earn $900,000 if he makes the major-league team.

The Yankees have two uncertain spots at the back end of their rotation if Andy Pettitte retires. Colon will join the competition for one of those spots.

Colon went 21-9 with a 3.48 ERA for the Angels in 2005 and won the AL Cy Young, but has battled injuries since, going a combined 14-21 with a 5.18 ERA in 47 starts and one relief appearance with the Angels, Red Sox and White Sox.
