Just hours after the Cleveland Indians released outfield Ben Francisco, the Yankees signed the 31-year-old to a minor-league deal.
He is expected to arrive on Wednesday from Arizona and compete for an outfield position. The Yankees considered Francisco as a non-roster invitee before the season began, with his ability to play both corner outfield spots, but he decided to join Cleveland.
Francisco, who has played for five different teams in a six-year career, batted .240 while playing with Toronto, Houston and Tampa Bay last season. With Curtis Granderson out until at least May, Francisco will compete for a spot with Juan Rivera, Matt Diaz, Zoilo Almonte and Ronnier Mustelier.
