The Yankees signed Ben Broussard, the Rangers Opening Day first baseman before struggling mightily this year, to a minor league contract today, and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. The 31-year-old left-hander hit .159 with three home runs and eight RBI for the Rangers before being released. Over seven years with Cleveland, Seattle and Texas, he’s hit .263 with 87 home runs and 314 RBI.

Broussard started at first base tonight for SWB, and wound up going 3-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored.

We’ll have a lot more in the morning on both the Mets and Yankees, as we’ll look at the questions now surrounding Ian Kennedy’s replacement (Joba Chamberlain?) now that the right-hander has gone on the disabled list, and we’ll also have full coverage of Pedro Martinez’s rehab start against the No. 1 pick in 2007, left-hander David Price – hopefully including a conversation with St. Lucie pitching coach Dan Murphy following the game.
