TAMPA — The Yankees passed on one member of the 2017 Astros when Carlos Correa went to Minnesota. On Sunday, they agreed to a minor league deal with another member of that infamous team, Marwin Gonzalez.
Aaron Boone called Gonzalez “heady,” a “gamer,” “a winning-type player” and a “pro.”
Asked if it would be an issue to have a key member of the sign-stealing Houston team that beat the Yankees in the playoffs en route to a World Series title, Boone said, “No … I think we’ve moved past this.”
The Gonzalez deal, which would be worth $1.15 million if he’s in the majors, according to a source, was pending a physical as of Sunday.
The 33-year-old switch hitter has struggled mightily the past two seasons, finishing with a .606 OPS with the Twins in 2020 and a .579 OPS last year, split between Boston and Houston.
The Yankees have signed former Astro Marwin Gonzalez to a minor league contract. Getty ImagesNewly acquired Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who had another hit in Sunday’s 8-7 loss to the Tigers at Steinbrenner Field, can play multiple positions, as can Jose Peraza, also in camp on a minor league deal.
The Yankees also like the versatility of prospect Oswaldo Cabrera. The 23-year-old hit a grand slam Sunday.
Boone said Gerrit Cole’s next appearance of the spring could be another live batting practice, which means he may only get two Grapefruit League starts before the regular season.
Domingo German recently started a throwing program after being shut down following a diagnosis of a right shoulder impingement. The right-hander said Sunday the injury, which he also dealt with in the second half of last season, cropped up again in late December. Because the MLB lockout prohibited players from talking to teams, German said his agent had to get permission to talk to the team’s trainers to let them know the situation.
Of greater concern is that German will be out for a while. He said Sunday through an interpreter that he feels good now and isn’t worried about the shoulder being an ongoing issue.
He is playing catch from 60 feet.
Manny Banuelos, the former Yankee prospect whose career was sidetracked by injuries, took another step in his comeback attempt with a shutout inning.
“Manny was good,’’ Boone said. “Smooth and easy. It’s what we’ve seen from him from live BP. He has a nice presence to him. He looks good.”
Manny Banuelos, Charles Wenzelberg / New York PostLucas Luetge was a little-known left-hander trying to make the team last year. He became an important part of the bullpen last season and pitched a scoreless inning in his first appearance of the spring on Sunday.
“He had to come here and prove it [last year],’’ Boone said. “He had a good spring and took it from there and threw a lot of meaningful innings.”
Another important lefty, Wandy Peralta, also tossed a scoreless inning.
The Yankees added some lefty depth to their bullpen by signing Yoan Aybar off waivers from the Rockies. The 24-year-old Aybar was originally signed by the Red Sox in 2014 as an outfielder, but became a pitcher in 2018.
He spent 2021 at Double-A and had a whopping 33 walks in 46 ¹/₃ innings. A hard-thrower, Aybar figures to start the season at Double-A Somerset. He was waived by the Rockies to make room on their 40-man roster for Kris Bryant. The Yankees’ 40-man roster is now full.
