TORONTO — Manager Aaron Boone placed a call to Anthony Volpe on Monday night after the high school shortstop was taken by the Yankees in the first round of the MLB draft.
“You could tell he was excited, you could hear the people in the background,’’ Boone said of the Delbarton School shortstop, who was selected with the 30th pick. “Hopefully it was a call that started welcoming him into our organization.’’
Volpe has committed to Vanderbilt, but the Yankees must have felt he was willing to sign to use a first-round pick on him.
Didi Gregorius went 0-for-5 for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday night at Buffalo. In six minor league games (four with SWB, two with Tampa) Gregorius is hitting .130 (3-for-25). He is scheduled to come off the IL on Friday at Cleveland.
Adam Ottavino has not allowed a run in his last 17 relief appearances and 16 ²/₃ innings. That’s the second-longest streak by a Yankee since Dellin Betances went 18 games without giving up a run from May 27-July 7 last season. It was also the third-longest active streak in the big leagues. He did not pitch in the Yankees’ 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
Betances, who has yet to pitch in a big-league game this year due to a right shoulder problem, is scheduled to face live hitters Wednesday.
