With spring training less than two weeks away, the Yankees made a minor move yesterday to bolster their outfield depth.
The Yankees acquired Justin Maxwell in a trade with the Nationals for minor league pitcher Adam Olbrychowski.
Maxwell, 27, was rated as the Nationals’ eighth-best prospect by Baseball America before last season. He batted .144 in 67 games for the Nationals last year. He hit .287 in 66 games at Triple-A Syracuse with six home runs and 21 RBIs.
Maxwell had Tommy John surgery in October but is expected to be ready for spring training.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated outfielder Jordan Parraz for assignment.
