The Yankees said goodbye to Jake Bauers and three relievers during a busy Friday that ended with Kyle Higashioka still on the roster.
After the dust settled from decisions leading up to the non-tender deadline, Bauers had been shipped to Milwaukee; Albert Abreu, Lou Trivino and lefty Anthony Misiewicz were not offered contracts; and despite a catcher surplus, Higashioka appeared to be a survivor (for the night at least).
The Yankees’ first move involved sending Bauers to the Brewers for a pair of young, minor league outfielders in Jace Avina and Brian Sánchez.
The 28-year-old Bauers was a temporary find for the 2023 Yankees, hitting his way out of Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and performing for a significant stretch for a big-league club that faced so many offensive injuries.
But Bauers’ bat cooled as the season went on and posted just a .495 OPS in 30 games in August and September.
A below-average corner outfielder and first baseman, he finished the season with 12 home runs but just a .202 average for a Yankees club that needs to hit for contact better.
Yankees trade Jake Bauers to Brewers Charles Wenzelberg/New York PostIn return, the Yankees received far-off prospects who do not yet have to be added to the 40-man roster. According to MLB Pipeline, Avina was the Brewers’ 29th-ranked prospect.
The 20-year-old finished his 2023, in his first season at Low-A ball, with an .815 OPS including 14 homers in 99 games.
The 19-year-old Sánchez made his pro debut this year and slashed .297/.414/.446 in the Dominican Summer League.
After offloading Bauers, the Yankees elected to not extend contracts toward Abreu, Trivino and Misiewicz, who became free agents.
The 28-year-old Abreu pitched well enough to remain a Yankee all of last season, in which he could not be optioned to the minors, but did not pitch well enough to gain much of manager Aaron Boone’s trust.

Trivino, 32, was excellent upon coming over from Oakland at the 2022 trade deadline, but he never made it to the mound in 2023 and required Tommy John surgery in May.
The Yankees will let Trivino hit free agency rather than guarantee what would likely have been about $4 million toward a pitcher who will miss at least a few months of next season.
Misiewicz appeared in three September games with the Yankees.
A significant development for the Yankees entailed no development: Higashioka, the longest-tenured player in the organization, remained on the roster and thus will be tendered a contract.
Drafted by the Yankees in 2008, Higashioka has proven to be a dependable backup catcher with strong receiving skills and a bit of pop.
But his roster spot has been in question for a team that will need to pare down its catching depth.
The Yankees have six catchers on their roster, with Jose Trevino and Austin Wells expected to see plenty of time next season; Ben Rortvedt out of options; and prospects Carlos Narvaez and Agustin Ramirez added to the 40-man this month.
“It’s not a strong position in the game. It’s not a deep position in the game,” general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday. “A lot of teams are knocking on the door about our catching depth.”
The depth remained intact for another day as the Yankees’ 40-man roster was trimmed to 36.
