Rougned Odor is on his way to the Yankees.
The Yankees traded for the 27-year-old infielder on Wednesday after Odor was designated for assignment by the Rangers before Opening Day. He has two years and $27 million remaining on his contract, with Texas expected to pick up much of it.
In the exchange, the Yankees sent minor league outfielders Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers to the Rangers. To make room for Odor on the 40-man roster, Thairo Estrada was designated for assignment.
How the lefty-swinging Odor fits in The Bronx remains to be seen.
He’s only played second base in the majors — and not especially well of late — and his offensive production has plummeted in recent years. While still with Texas this spring, Odor worked at third base and could see time there when he gets to the Yankees.
“We’ll see,’’ Aaron Boone said when asked where Odor might play.
Boone said the organization “saw an opportunity to add a talented guy, add some depth and strength to our roster. We’re gonna need to lean on things over the course of a long season. We hope he can get here and we can help him get the talent out we’ve seen flash over the years.”

Odor signed a six-year, $49.5 million extension four years ago, when he was coming off back-to-back stellar years in Texas. But he’s been unable to get on base much — although he has shown power, hitting 30 homers three times — most recently in 2019.
But his strikeout rate has soared, peaking at 31.8 percent last season and he’s been among the least-productive hitters in the majors in three of the last four seasons and although some question his glove, Boone said the Yankees view him “as a solid defender” with “decent returns” at third this spring.
With Gio Urshela coming off offseason elbow surgery, Odor could prove to be an option at the spot, especially with Miguel Andujar still dealing with a wrist injury.
The Yankees took a similar flier on Jay Bruce in the offseason, intrigued by how his lefty bat would play in Yankee Stadium. Bruce seemed on his way out of the organization late in spring training before Luke Voit went down with a partially torn meniscus in his left knee — which turned Bruce into the regular first baseman to open the season.
With Odor, the Yankees could option Tyler Wade to the alternate site in Scranton and use Gio Urshela as the backup shortstop, with Odor filling in at second or third.
Odor still showed signs of life against right-handed pitching in an otherwise abysmal 2020 season. He hit eight of his 10 homers versus righties and his OPS was .737 against right-handers, compared to just .407 with lefties on the mound.
“The talent is there, we feel like, undeniably,’’ Boone said. “He has the ability to impact the ball from the left side and at Yankee Stadium, we feel like that could play up,’’ Boone said. “Getting in our environment and culture will hopefully unlock some things for him. We’ve got to see where he’s at physically.”
The Yankees could trade Estrada, 25, who has played 61 games for them over the prior two seasons.
Stowers was acquired from Seattle in what amounted to a three-team trade with the Reds in the deal that sent Sonny Gray to Cincinnati prior to the 2019 season. The 24-year-old was most recently with Single-A Charleston. The 20-year-old Cabello was with rookie level Pulaski in 2019.
