Opening Day has arrived — and so has Anthony Volpe.

The Yankees started the 2023 season on Thursday afternoon against the Giants with a 5-0 win, hoping to take the next step after they were swept out of the ALCS by the Astros a season ago.

Volpe is the Yankees’ top prospect and won the shortstop job with an electric spring training — and is the biggest addition from last year’s team.

Gerrit Cole pitched six shutout innings and set a Yankees Opening Day record with 11 strikeouts.

Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole lead Yankees to commanding Opening Day win over Giants

By Greg Joyce

One down, 62 to go for Aaron Judge and many more for the Yankees.

In his first game as captain, beginning an encore of his 62-home run season against the team that nearly lured him away from New York over the offseason, Judge crushed a home run in his first plate appearance of the season.

It served as an overture for the Yankees’ picture-perfect Opening Day, which included six shutout innings from Gerrit Cole, a stolen base for Anthony Volpe in his MLB debut and a 5-0 win over the Giants on Thursday afternoon in The Bronx.
