BALTIMORE — Given that the Yankees have already said they expect José Caballero to reclaim his starting shortstop job once he returns from the 10-day injured list, there may not be much Anthony Volpe can do to change their minds during those 10 days.
But the homegrown shortstop did not exactly start off with a bang on Wednesday in his season debut, when he went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a fielding error as the Yankees got one-hit in a 7-0 loss to the Orioles at Camden Yards.
“Had some competitive at-bats,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Got to 3-2 there the last time, fouling some pitches off [before popping up]. Made a couple good plays in the field and then obviously missed a routine play.
Anthony Volpe strikes out with two me on in the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 7-0 loss to the Orioles on May 13, 2026 in Baltimore. AP“Overall, just for us, not a great day, not a great way to end the trip.”
Before Wednesday, Volpe’s last game with the Yankees had come in the ALDS last October, after which he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
While he was rehabbing that, Caballero played well enough to steal the job before going on the injured list himself Tuesday with a small fracture in his middle finger, which led to Volpe getting called up.
Volpe came up in a big spot in the fifth inning Wednesday, with runners on the corners, two outs and the Yankees trailing 3-0. He worked a full count on Kyle Bradish before swinging through a curveball, ending the Yankees’ best threat of the afternoon.
A former Gold Glove shortstop who took a step back defensively last season, Volpe committed the error in the eighth inning, bobbling a ball to his left, though it proved to be harmless.
Aaron Judge, who is close with Volpe and spoke to him for a while on the phone last week after the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A, said his message has been to “Take care of business.”
“There’s been a lot of questions, a lot of stuff going on with that, circling with the media,” Judge said. “But the biggest thing is block out the noise. There’s going to be a lot of noise with it. Just go out there and play your game. He’s a special part of this organization, special player since he got called up [in 2023]. Just block out the noise and go do your job.”
Giancarlo Stanton’s MRI exam on Monday did not reveal as much healing in his calf as the Yankees were hoping for, so the veteran DH will not be cleared to start running this week.

“[The strain] is still lingering there,” Boone said. “Not any worse. He’s upped what he’s been able to do. But I don’t think it allows us to clear him to really start ramping up the running yet.”
Jasson Domínguez recently received a PRP injection in his left shoulder to help with the healing of his mild AC joint sprain.
The outfielder is in the midst of a 7-10 day shutdown, but he has remained clear of any concussion symptoms.
