TORONTO — The Yankees placed one of their hottest hitters on a growing injured list Saturday, but his replacement picked up where he left off.

After Trent Grisham landed on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain, Jasson Domínguez came off the IL to take his roster spot and homered in the Yankees’ 3-1 win over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Domínguez, who missed just over a month with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder, arrived about an hour before first pitch and got thrown right into the fire, starting his first game in right field as a big leaguer. He also had the Yankees’ only hit in seven innings against Kevin Gausman, a solo shot that tied the game in the fourth inning.

“Now with injuries, thankfully we got guys like [Domínguez] and other players,” said Paul Goldschmidt, who hit the go-ahead two-run blast in the ninth. “I think we all forget how young he is [23] because he got to the big leagues a few years ago. But he’s going to continue to learn, continue to get better. We’re going to need him to contribute if we’re going to win and get to the point where we need to be.”

Domínguez, who played three of his five rehab games in right field, was not tested at all on Saturday. But the natural center fielder said he feels more comfortable in right than when he first made the transition to left in 2024.

Spencer Jones started in center for Grisham and will likely take over the bulk of playing time in his absence, though Aaron Boone indicated he could also shift Cody Bellinger there on occasion.

Grisham, meanwhile, is expected to undergo tests on Monday back in New York to determine the severity of his strain and how long he will be out. He woke up on Saturday feeling better than he did on Friday night, and was able to move around some pregame, but the Yankees still thought he was going to need “at least several days,” so they placed him on the IL.

“Hopefully it’s something that’s not a long-term thing, but we felt like the 10 days was probably necessary,” Boone said.

The Yankees now have half of their 10 players in the starting lineup (including the pitcher) from Opening Day on the injured list, as Grisham joined Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Austin Wells and Max Fried. The timing is brutal for Grisham, who had been red-hot, batting .370 with a .987 OPS over his last 19 games.

“I would say that we kind of know what we’re getting into when you sign up to play professional sports,” Grisham said Saturday. “It’s just the cost of doing business sometimes. Sometimes [injuries] come in bunches, sometimes they don’t happen at all.”

Boone indicated that his outfield alignment could evolve in the coming days as he watches how Domínguez adjusts to right field.

But the manager maintained that the Yankees have the depth to withstand this run of injuries to key players.

“The 162 is coming for you,” he said. “The one thing is, I feel we’re way more equipped to deal with it than we have [been] in some years. It’s a great opportunity for some of our young players to get real opportunities, that are ready for those opportunities. Not only that, but I feel like really capable of coming up and playing well for us.”
