And they appear to have dodged disaster, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. avoiding the worst after he was hit by a pitch on the left forearm in the bottom of the fifth.
After being looked at by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad at the Stadium, X-rays and a CT scan both came back negative.
In the team’s second-to-last game a year ago, it was Anthony Rizzo who was hit by a pitch and fractured two fingers.

Rizzo ended up being knocked out of the ALDS — with Jon Berti and Oswaldo Cabrera learning the position on the fly against the Royals — and even when Rizzo returned for the ALCS and World Series, he had just one extra-base hit throughout the playoffs.
And while Chisholm, a key reason the Yankees have made a late charge at Toronto in the race for the division, was forced from the game when he was hit by a 96-mph sinker from Baltimore’s Grant Wolfram, the team seems to have avoided a similar situation.

That was no guarantee when Chisholm retreated immediately to the dugout after being hit, where he was examined by trainers and replaced by José Cabellero as a pinch-runner.
“Especially this time of year, getting down to the postseason, he’s gonna be a big part of what we do in October,” Aaron Judge said of Chisholm. “So you never like seeing him go down in pain. You don’t know what’s gonna happen, especially when you’re hit in the forearm area. He’s a tough kid.”

He fell hard on his back and left shoulder after leaping to try to catch a high throw from left fielder Cody Bellinger in the top of the fourth.
With Gunnar Henderson on second, Chisholm leapt and fell on a diving Henderson and stayed on the ground before remaining in the game.

With the regular season ending Sunday and the Yankees already having secured a postseason berth, they will cross their fingers Chisholm’s injury isn’t too serious.
