The Reds’ chances of playoff contention are slipping away, and their chances of selling off assets in the next week are slowly rising. Including Yasiel Puig.

Though president of baseball operations Dick Williams told The Athletic at the All-Star break that they planned to be trade deadline buyers, they’ve now fallen 6 1/2 games back in the wild card and seven back in the division. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that could mean the Reds’ outlook has changed, particularly in regard to Puig.

The former Dodgers right fielder’s value could be at a high right now. His last month has been red-hot, with a .351/.407/.610 slash line. His one-year deal means a long-term commitment to a potential clubhouse cancer isn’t a worry.

The possibility of Puig getting moved is an intriguing one. Seeing him in the postseason, or even playing meaningful games down the stretch, would inject some fun into the season’s final months.
