For the first time in more than two months, Yoenis Cespedes appeared in a real game. Now it’s even more realistic that the two-time All-Star could rejoin the Mets for the start of the second half of the season.
Out since May 13 with a hip flexor and strained quadriceps, Cespedes appeared in his first rehab game since hitting the disabled list, going 1-for-4 Tuesday for the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Mets, while playing seven innings in left field. One day earlier, the 32-year-old participated in a simulated game and had two home runs — along with a single and a walk — in seven plate appearances, while playing five innings in left field.
The last-place Mets (39-55) return from the All-Star break to play the Yankees on Friday night in The Bronx. Prior to Cespedes’ absence, the Mets were 19-18.
