After drawing comparisons to Mariano Rivera from Rays manager Kevin Cash following his MLB debut, Jonathan Loaisiga wasn’t as sharp Wednesday, throwing 84 pitches in 3 ²/₃ innings.
“I felt like when he got ahead, when he tried to put guys away, probably pitches that down in Double-A, maybe guys swing at, but I think he’s got to do a little better job of making it look like a strike when he’s going for the chase pitch,’’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the Yankees’ 7-5 come-from-behind win over the Mariners Wednesday night at the Stadium. “Too often it was a ball out of the hand, and these guys up here are going to recognize that, so it led to even when he was ahead in the count, to a lot of deep counts.”
Ichiro Suzuki isn’t an active player anymore — he’s technically a special assistant to the chairman for the Mariners — but he still takes batting practice and on Wednesday, Seattle manager Scott Servais mentioned the idea of Ichiro participating in the Home Run Derby next month.
“I know a lot of players don’t want to get into the home run hitting contest, I think Ichiro would be a great addition to the home run hitting contest in D.C.,’’ Servais said on MLB Network Radio. “He takes BP every day and he’s really launching balls,” Servais said. “It would be really fun to watch. I think it would draw a lot of fan interest.”
The former Yankee’s response?
“I thought our skipper doesn’t like to tell jokes, but I guess he does,” Ichiro said through an interpreter. “That’s the funniest thing he’s said the first half of the year. … Right now, I’m not a player.”
