The market is open.
There are a lot of big names available for 2019 NBA free agency, and where they end up could re-shape the league as everyone knows it.
Kevin Durant is the league’s biggest domino and he’ll likely set the tone despite a torn Achilles that will keep him sidelined for the 2019-20 season. He won’t be the only one in for a payday: Kawhi Leonard, fresh of an NBA title with the Toronto Raptors, will be getting a max contract, as will the likes of Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker. Klay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmy Butler are likewise looking at a big payday this summer.
The max contract is for veteran players who have been named to an All-NBA team, and/or received an MVP or Defensive Player of the Year title, and not been traded after their first four seasons in the league. They can receive a high percentage of a team’s salary cap — up to 30% if he remains with his team — that is significantly less if he finds a new team to play for.
Starting at 6:01 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 30, teams may begin to negotiate with free agents, but not sign them or make trades during the period known as the free agent moratorium. Deals may officially be inked at noon on Saturday, July 6.
