An AAU basketball coach allegedly punched a referee into unconsciousness at a tournament in Kentucky on Saturday night.

The 40-year-old coach, Keyon Menifield, of Flint, Michigan, was arrested, jailed and charged with assault, according to the McCracken County Sheriff Office’s Facebook page.

“During the disagreement the referee turned to walk away,” the Facebook post said. “As he did, Menifield punched the referee, knocking him unconscious, causing minor injuries. Menifield then fled the area prior to Deputies arrival. Menifield was quickly located at a local hotel and taken into custody.”

Menifield claimed the referee — identified as Kenny Culp, per the Louisville Courier Journal — called him a name, but apologized to Culp and his family, and his players and their parents, in a Facebook post, the newspaper reported.

“buddy called us a name he shouldn’t have but that doesn’t make it right for me to put my hands on him,” Menifield wrote, according to the Courier Journal.
