A feel-good story has emerged from the Lakers’ dumpster fire of a season.

Alex Caruso has helped the Lakers orchestrate back-to-back upsets of the playoff-bound Clippers and Jazz to cap off what has been an impressive end to the season for the 25-year-old.

“The more time he plays, the more he shows what he can do, what he’s capable of doing,” Lakers coach Luke Walton told reporters of Caruso after Friday’s win over the Clippers, in which the former Texas A&M standout scored 32 points.

“The more he makes a case for himself, he lets the whole NBA see what we’ve been seeing. The message all the time right now is we’re gonna find people that are competing.”

And before that came Caruso’s follow-back dunk in a loss to the Warriors on Thursday that had LeBron James jumping up from the bench in shock.

Caruso spent his 2016-17 rookie season playing for Oklahoma City’s G League franchise before parlaying successful consecutive impressive Summer League performances into one-year contracts with the Lakers.

He had played sparingly in his two seasons until the last month with the Lakers, who shut down James and accepted their reality as a non-playoff team. Caruso has 10 double-figure-points games since March 6 and could be getting closer to earning some NBA security this offseason, be it with the Lakers or another franchise.

“We got the ball to AC,” teammate Rajon Rondo told the Los Angeles Times. “We got out of the way.”

It’s not exactly how the Lakers saw this season ending, but it’s perhaps changed Caruso’s career and given something for the team to enjoy.
