In terms of injury updates, this was a new one.
“Not as bad as China,” Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said Monday. “Not nearly as bad.”
He was talking about Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who suffered a right adductor strain Saturday night against the Bucks — the same injury that cost him more than 2 ½ months after originally straining his left adductor in Jeremy Lin’s charity game in China on Aug. 4.
Though Atkinson would not put any expectations on when Hollis-Jefferson might be able to return, he was optimistic.
“It’s not a pull, it’s not a tear, [it’s] a strain. So that’s good news,” Atkinson said. “I can’t give you a timetable, but it’s not a huge, long process like he went through in the offseason. So I’d say the news is positive in that sense.”
Hollis-Jefferson played just 2:59 Saturday in Milwaukee before exiting the game for good. He said he felt “a little strange feeling on a crossover” and decided to take the cautious route and talk to the training staff. The 23-year-old forward missed the entire preseason because of the prior injury and did not return to action until Oct. 24 while not regaining his starting spot until Nov. 25.
For however long Hollis-Jefferson is out, Atkinson still is determining how to spread the minutes. On Saturday, he turned to Kenneth Faried for a season-high 27:18 and he responded with 21 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

“We’re just going to have to find some combination that works,” Atkinson said.
Another player who could help fill some minutes is Treveon Graham, who has played just two games this season because of a hamstring injury but is “super close” to returning, Atkinson said.
“He did the whole practice today,” Atkinson said. “We’ll get feedback [Tuesday]. But he’s really, really close, which is, that’s great timing for us. Because he can play the four, he can play the three, he can play the two.”
Though Graham likely won’t be ready by Wednesday, Atkinson said they have not decided yet whether they want him to play any G-League games first.
“But especially with Rondae’s thing, it changes the conversation a little,” he said.
Allen Crabbe is expected to miss his 10th straight game Wednesday against the Pelicans at Barclays Center because of a sore right knee. Atkinson called him “doubtful.”
“Still is not there,” Atkinson said. “He’s still not where I want him to be and he’s not where he wants to be in terms of being ready.”
