The Cavaliers are going all-in on making a run this season. 

Cleveland has traded injured point guard Ricky Rubio and his expiring $17.8 million contract, a lottery-protected 2022 first-round pick and two second-round picks — for 2022 and 2027, via Utah — to the Pacers for Caris LeVert and a 2022 second-round pick in an attempt to beef up its roster for the postseason. 

LeVert, a former Net, averaged 18.7 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Pacers this season after returning last year from renal cell carcinoma. The Michigan product will add experience and scoring ability to a young Cavs roster that’s made waves behind the trio of Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and his former Nets teammate Jarrett Allen. 

Rick Carlisle confirmed the deal prior to the Pacers’ tip-off with the Cavaliers.

“Cleveland just picked up a heck of a player,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said in his pregame press conference.

The 27-year-old LeVert is coming off a 42-point outing against the Bulls on Friday. Upon being traded by the Nets to the Pacers last year, doctors found a mass on his kidney that turned out to be renal cell carcinoma. LeVert later said the trade may have saved his life. 

Allen and LeVert have experience playing together in Brooklyn and were close as teammates. A Pickerington, Ohio native, LeVert will also be playing closer to home. 

The Cavaliers entered Sunday in fourth place in the East, 1 ¹/₂ games behind the Bulls and Heat. 

“Cleveland is in a great position, and adding a guy like Caris LeVert very well could push them to the top,” Carlisle said.

LeVert didn’t have to wait long to see his former team — Indiana played the Cavaliers on Sunday night in Cleveland.
