Caris LeVert will be traveling with the Nets on their upcoming three-game road trip.
The team officially ruled him out for Saturday’s matchup with the Rockets, but the 25-year-old continues to have full-contact workouts.
“Caris will come with us so we can continue the full contact practices we’ve been doing, whether it’s in a small group or as a team,” Coach Kenny Atkinson said after practice Thursday. “I think we’re still building with the contact practice. I don’t have a number of practices. I think once the performance team is satisfied with what they see. I think a part of that is, he can get through the practice, what is that recovery like? We’re still in the process. Really good news, he’s integrating himself into contact practices. Like I said, that bodes well for hopefully a return soon.”
Earlier in the week, LeVert, who had surgery on his thumb to correct ligament damage, told reporters that the next step was to get his “legs up under me.” The Nets can’t wait for that day to come, despite posting a winning record without LeVert and Kyrie Irving (shoulder impingement).
LeVert’s return would likely take a lot of weight off of Spencer Dinwiddie’s back. Dinwiddie has assumed a majority of the Nets’ ball-handling and none of his teammates have thoroughly stepped into the backup point guard role. The Nets went 3-for-21 without Dinwiddie on the floor in Thursday’s loss to the Knicks.
“Caris’ return would help that I think,” Atkinson said.
Taking on Russell Westbrook and James Harden against the Rockets Saturday is going to be major a test for his team, and Atkinson knows it.
“We do not have the firepower to match that,” Atkinson said. “If you look at our offense, right now we’re kind of built on getting stops I think. Our defense keeps improving, our offense keeps, you know, kind of going down. The focus always is here, our defensive mentality. We spend 80 percent of our time on that. So the focus will be on those guys. We had a little success in Brooklyn but we know Russell’s playing, he’s taking it to another level. He’s said he’s healthy. He looks like he’s healthy. Now you have to deal with both of those guys, and then obviously the adjustments that teams are doing, that throws another kind of wrench into it or a tool we could use. We’ve definitely got to slow those guys down.”
Kyrie Irving will not join the team on the road trip. Instead, he’ll continue his rehab schedule in Brooklyn.
“He worked on-court today,” Atkinson said. “I watched the workout, it was pretty intense. We just haven’t integrated him into contact yet.”
