Carmelo Anthony is one step closer to joining his next super team.

The former Knick has reached a verbal agreement with the Rockets to sign as a free agent after clearing waivers last week, Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday. The Anthony-Rockets marriage was believed to be in the works since the Thunder dealt the forward to the Hawks in a three-team trade last month.

The 34-year-old Anthony reportedly told the Rockets he plans to sign when he returns from South Africa, where he is doing charitable work this summer.

Houston gives Anthony a second chance at helping a team already teeming with stars after Anthony’s Big Three trial in Oklahoma City with Russell Westbrook and Paul George did not go as planned. It was the 10-time All-Star’s worst statistical season in his 15-year career, concluding with his being benched late in the series of the Thunder’s first-round playoff loss to the Jazz.

Rockets star and 2018 MVP James Harden recently sang Anthony’s praises and dropped another hint about his joining the best team during the regular season last year. Houston fell one win short of defeating the Warriors in the Western Conference finals.

“Melo’s a proven vet,” Harden told reporters after Anthony’s trade to the Hawks. “He just wants to win at this point, so it would be great for him to be on our team. The current roster we have now, we’ve got good guys back and we keep making forward progress.”
