Before 2014, no NBA team had ever employed a full-time, paid female coach on its staff. Before long, an NBA coaching staff without a woman will look out of place.
The Boston Celtics became the latest team to hire a female assistant coach, bringing Kara Lawson to their bench, according to ESPN.
Lawson, who starred at Tennessee and spent 12 years in the WNBA, follows the footsteps of San Antonio’s Becky Hammon, Cleveland’s Lindsay Gottlieb and Dallas’ Jenny Boucek.
Lawson, 38, spent the past three years as a TV analyst for the Washington Wizards, in addition to ESPN, and has been coaching the newly created USA Basketball 3-on-3 teams, which will compete in the 2020 Olympics.
