It remains a mystery as to when Kristaps Porzingis will join the Mavericks for the upcoming NBA season.
With the start of training camps Tuesday, Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle didn’t have much to offer about the status of the former Knicks star, who underwent surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee in October.
“His rehab has gone without issue,” Carlisle said. “He’s on schedule. If anything, we’re having to hold him back right now. He’s back to doing light court work, so things are going well. He will not, however, play until at least January.”
The NBA season is scheduled to begin Dec. 22.
Last month, Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said the organization would not rush the 7-foot-3 center’s rehab and neglected to give a specific timeline.
The 25-year-old Porzingis suffered the injury in Game 1 of the first-round playoff series against the Clippers. He managed to play in Games 2 and 3 before he was ruled out for the remainder of the series.
In his third season with the Knicks, who drafted him fourth-overall in 2015, Porzingis tore his ACL and missed the entire 2018-19 season. The Knicks then traded him to Dallas in January 2019 and he subsequently signed a five-year, $158 million contract extension.
