The Nets’ current NBA-high seven-game winning streak isn’t just surprising: It’s historic.

In the history of the NBA, only four other teams followed a losing skid of eight or more games directly with a winning streak of at least seven games: the Syracuse Nationals, during the 1958-59 season; the Bulls, in 1983-84; the Warriors, in 2003-04; and the Bulls again, last season (stats courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau).

That Nets losing skid had some fans — and even media members — clamoring for Brooklyn to follow the 76ers’ game plan and tank this season in the hope of getting the top pick in the lottery. But lottery changes this season give the worst team just a 14 percent chance at the top pick, making tanking impractical.

The Nets are far more intent on continuing to build their culture, and might even be buyers at the Feb. 7 trade deadline.

An added upside of a long winning streak — and another solid jump this season — is making the Nets more attractive to free agents next summer. There are persistent whispers about their interest in one of the biggest on the market.

A Nets assistant coach was spotted having dinner with Toronto star Kawhi Leonard when the Raptors were in town, according to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. The assistant wasn’t named.

Nets assistant Tiago Splitter played alongside Leonard for his first four seasons and is said to still be close to the All-Star, while fellow Nets assistant Jacque Vaughn was a Spurs assistant during Leonard’s rookie year.

Leonard, traded from the Spurs to Toronto in July, also has a preexisting relationship with Nets general manager Sean Marks from his days as a Spurs assistant coach and assistant GM.

Allen Crabbe (sore right knee) is out for Friday’s game against the Pacers. It will be the fifth consecutive game Crabbe has missed.

After shooting just 26.9 percent from 3-point range in his first 13 games, Crabbe had come around and hit 46.5 percent from deep in his next 15. The Nets can only hope missing more than a week doesn’t cool him off.
