ESPN and a former Nets executive had a little fun with the Knicks on draft night.
Before the Knicks selected RJ Barrett with the third overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday night at Barclays Center, ESPN flashed former Nets assistant general manager Bobby Mark’s “Team Needs” across its ticker.
Instead of point guard or center, it read: Everything (starters and bench).
The Knicks certainly have plenty of needs coming off an NBA-worst record of 17-65 this past season and ESPN didn’t sugar coat it. The team’s roster had plenty of young player, including rookies Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson and Allonzo Trier and second-year players Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr.
Barrett is the first piece of help on the way. The Knicks have enough cap space to sign two free agents to a max contract this offseason. One of those was potentially going to Kevin Durant, who will not miss all of next season after surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles.
