The Jazz continued their offseason of quietly building themselves into contenders on Wednesday, by signing former Knick Emmanuel Mudiay and Jeff Green, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Mudiay’s deal is for one year, though financial terms weren’t reported. Green agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal, per ESPN.
Though nobody will mistake these for world-beating signings, both players add depth to a team that has already made big offseason moves in trading for Mike Conley and signing Bojan Bogdanovic. Mudiay, who averaged 14.8 points and 3.9 assists with the Knicks last year, was reportedly sold on playing behind Conley, along with Jazz coach Quin Snyder’s developmental pedigree.
The Jazz won 50 games behind rising star Donovan Mitchell last season and have now made considerable improvements in the last few weeks.
Though widely considered a bust as the former No. 7 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, Mudiay is just 23 with room to grow. He will be playing backup minutes behind Conley, who was on the floor for 33.5 minutes per game with a tanking Memphis team last season. Mudiay showed flashes of potential last season with the Knicks while in a point guard battle with Trey Burke and Frank Ntilikina.
As for Green, the 32-year old has bounced around as a bench scorer for the last few seasons, averaging 12.3 points with the Wizards last season. He’ll likely play the same role in Utah.
