A fan from a rival high school basketball team flopped around on the floor during a game Friday to mock a player’s epilepsy, witnesses claim.

James Franklin Jr., a senior at Indianapolis’ Cathedral High School, had part of his brain removed in August 2017 to reduce his number of epileptic seizures. He’s battled epilepsy since childhood, Indy Star reported. In spite of everything, he still pursues his love of basketball.

During the first half of the game against Center Grove at their gymnasium in Greenwood, Franklin was in line to shoot free throws when a Center Grove student, who is not being identified, made the mocking gesture. Several students reportedly screamed insults in front of the student section, Franklin’s mom, Tamieka Franklin, recalled.

“He heard, ‘Have another seizure, have another seizure,’” Tamieka said.

“That shows me they did their homework and it was not a coincidence.”

Franklin posted video of the student’s antics on his Twitter page.

“He thought it was coo to act as me having a seizure smh,” Franklin wrote along with the footage.

Franklin’s coach, Jason Delaney, said that after watching the video, he thinks it was the student’s intention to mock his player’s medical condition.

The same Center Grove student who pretended to have a seizure also reportedly pasted a cut-out of another rival senior’s mom’s face on his chest as the student attempted to shoot free throws, witnesses said.

“It didn’t really hit us until we went to dinner after the game,” Tamieka Franklin said.

“It was like, ‘Did that really happen?’ Did they really mock a young man who has overcome a disability to play the sport he loves? My hope is that it shines on a light on what he has overcome.”

His mother said her son has had to battle a lot of adversity in his life. Even though his brain surgery was successful, he suffers from depression as a result.

“He has to overcome a lot of insecurities in his life,” Tamieka said. “It has had a huge impact on him.”

“If they knew what it is like to not be able to drive,” Franklin told The Indy Channel. “Not to be able to go anywhere by yourself, be left alone, can’t even use the restroom without closing the door. You wouldn’t make a mockery of such a thing.”

Following the incident, administrators from Center Grove said they would use the bullying as a learning experience, the Indy Star reported.

“Children don’t always understand the potential perceptions and implications of their actions,” Center Grove officials said in a letter emailed to parents Monday.

“As parents and educators, we can view these kinds of situations as opportunities to teach our students how to show respect for others and consider the consequences of their actions at all times.”

The Center Grove student denies making fun of Franklin’s epilepsy and claims he was unaware of his condition. He told officials he just meant to “flop like a fish.” Tamieka said the student apologized to her son after the game. Center Grove officials say the student also met with Cathedral officials on Sunday to apologize.

Center Grove staff said they never heard any of the seizure comments during the game, but that they were still investigating the claims.

“We take all allegations seriously and are continuing to investigate who may have made those comments,” Center Grove officials wrote in the letter to parents.

On Saturday, the epilepsy foundation released the following statement in support of Franklin: “We are outraged that someone in our epilepsy community would be made fun of in this manner. Seizures are not a laughing matter. … James is an epilepsy warrior that should be celebrated not mocked.

“Making fun of someone having a seizure is bullying at its worst. … It is unfortunate, that the bad behavior of this student only adds to the ignorance, misunderstanding and fears that exist about seizures. We are contacting both schools to discuss the matter and offer our free epilepsy trainings for school personnel and students.”

Franklin’s coach called him a “warrior.”

“No one sets a better example or fights harder than James Franklin,” Delaney said.

Center Grove won Friday’s game, 63-60.
