It doesn’t look like the Houston Rockets are looking to break up James Harden and Chris Paul, but will rather try to give the duo some help.
The Rockets are planning to recruit Jimmy Butler to prod the 76ers for a sign-and-trade deal that would bring the Philadelphia All-Star to Houston, according to an ESPN report on Tuesday. The Rockets may see an opening to become the premier team in the Western Conference now that the Warriors’ future is uncertain due to Kevin Durant’s Achilles injury and free-agent status.
The NBA free agency period begins on Sunday.
For the Rockets to make this deal many moving parts would have to fall into place, according to the report. Houston doesn’t have the salary-cap space to sign Butler and need the 76ers to feel the threat they could lose the veteran for nothing which would motivate them to make a trade.
Houston potentially may have to make this a multi-team deal to satisfy the rules of base-year compensation that would cover Butler’s outgoing salary. Plus, league sources tell ESPN that Philadelphia is planning to make a strong push to sign Butler to a new deal, which could top any Rockets’ offer with a five-year, $190 million offer when free agency begins.
There is also a possibility the 76ers could offer Butler — who averaged 18.2 points per game in 55 games with Philadelphia after being acquired in a trade with the Timberwolves early in the season — a four-year, $146.5 million deal.
If the Rockets were to obtain Butler, it would add another mercurial personality into the locker room to join Harden and Paul, who reportedly have had a rocky relationship.
Butler forced his way out of Minnesota by requesting a trade and causing a scene when he showed up for his first scrimmage of the season in October, ripping into his teammates, coaches and the Timberwolves front office. In November, he was traded to the 76ers in exchange for Dario Saric and Robert Covington.
