It’s Mike D’Antoni
By MARC BERMAN
Itâs Mike over Mark. Itâs experience, speed and a winning track record over potential and New York sentiment.
Knicks president Donnie Walsh made a four-year, $24 million offer to Suns coach Mike DâAntoni on Saturday morning and the marquee fastbreak guru verbally accepted the package, beating out the Bulls, according to a member of D’Antoni’s inner circle.
The DâAntoni camp was looking for a five-year, $30 million deal but still got their $6 million per, which blew away the Bulls. Itâs unclear if Chicago made a formal offer after a Friday night meeting between DâAntoni and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf, who lives in Arizona. The Bulls werenât prepared to go beyond four years, $18 million.
“He felt comfortable with Donnie,” a source close to D’Antoni said. “They seemed excited to get him. It’s all gut feeling.”
Mark Jackson, the Queens product, former St. Johnâs/Knicks point guard and sentimental choice, finished as second choice after being the early frontrunner.
DâAntoni was at the top on Walshâs four-coach list of men he thought might be available after the first-round of the playoffs. When the Suns were eliminated in five games by San Antonio, Suns GM Steve Kerr gave DâAntoni permission to talk to the Knicks and Bulls because of a rift with Phoenix management and ownership.
DâAntoni may have accepted Walshâs offer in âSeven Seconds or Less,” which is the title of the recent book on DâAntoniâs run-and-gun Suns. The title is DâAntoniâs mantra, that the best chance of scoring is in the first seven seconds of the shot clock.
