James Harden must enjoy the speculation surrounding him.
Following an ESPN report that Harden turned down a two-year extension with Houston — which would’ve made him the first player in NBA history to make $50 million per season — the former MVP posted a brief and cryptic video to social media, in which he takes the cap off a bottle.
“No cap” is slang for not lying.
Harden is attempting to force Houston to trade him to the Brooklyn Nets, forming a super team with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. But he has little leverage to trigger a deal. The 31-year-old still has multiple years left on his contract with Houston, which has no reason to make a lesser deal with the Nets when the Rockets can acquire better packages with other teams, such as Philadelphia.
Thus far, ESPN reports that Houston and Brooklyn have engaged in talks, but there has been “no meaningful dialogue.”
Though Harden has reached the playoffs in each of his eight seasons in Houston, he hasn’t been to the NBA Finals since teaming with Durant in Oklahoma City in 2012.
