Jayson Tatum could suit up for the Boston Celtics as early as this week nearly 10 months after his Achilles injury, according to ESPN.
The six-time NBA All-Star forward reportedly is expected to make his season debut on Friday at TD Garden against the Dallas Mavericks.
The team listed Tatum as questionable on Thursday’s injury report.
Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum (0) dribbles the ball against the New York Knicks during the second half at Madison Square Garden, Saturday, February 24, 2024 in New York. Noah K. Murray-NY PostTatum, 28, who was described as ready to go, will inform the Celtics of a final decision over the next day.
Tatum took part in a 5-on-5 scrimmage with the Maine Celtics last month, and discussed his mindset on a potential return this season.
“It doesn’t mean that I’m coming back or I’m not, it’s just following the plan. So it’s just another step,” Tatum said referring to his recovery. “I don’t know the percentage. I just know I feel a little bit better every day. I just try to focus on that.
“… I’m still trying to figure it out. Still just going through the progressions of rehab. I’m not saying that I’m coming back or I’m not. It’s all about being 100 percent healthy and just going through the plan of this protocol.”
Tatum added that he’s aware Boston (41-21) is playing well in his absence.
“I’m just hyper aware of what’s going on. I think it would just stem from that. Obviously, I know what I bring to the table and bring to the team. But I’m also aware that these guys have been playing extremely well,” Tatum said.
The Celtics currently own the second-best record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best in the NBA heading into Friday’s game.
Tatum suffered a torn right Achilles tendon during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks on May 12, 2025 — and had surgery the next day.
The NBA champ pulled back the curtain on his rehab journey in “The Quiet Work,” a five-part docu-series from NBC and YouTube, which began airing on Feb. 23.
Tatum averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game last season.
He is in the first season of the five-year, $314 million extension he signed in 2024.
