LAS VEGAS – The prevailing thinking with Knicks brass is Jordan Hill will have the better career than Toney Douglas, but the former FSU point guard will have a better rookie season.

Today concluded the Knicks summer-league practices and they debut tomorrow vs. Memphis at 6 p.m.

Douglas, the 29th pick, looked incredibly poised, smart and feisty in scrimmages and has shown leadership qualities. The 6-10 Hill, selected eighth over, has shown bursts, but his mid-range shot isn’t falling and he’s gotten blocked a few times on the low post. But he draws fouls and could turn into a dunking machine with his athleticism and activity.

His strength appears an issue. The Knicks think Hill doesn’t have a solid lower-core strength right now. That takes time and work. Hill only started b-ball as a high school junior. Still, the Knicks rated him above Hasheem Thabeet in the draft. Thabeet struggled in his debut with 9 points and faces the Knicks tomorrow.

“As a staff we loved him,” Knicks summer-league coach Phil Weber said of Hill.”Potentially he brings so much – he’s 6-10 ½, incredible wingspan. He brings, from my perspective, the same things Amare (Stoudemire) had.”

Douglas? There’s not much not to like. Defense is his trademark but he runs the point with authority and can make the open shot. He gets it and bring all the intangibles you love in a PG. “He’s got another gear he didn’t show in college,” Donnie Walsh added.

Though July hasn’t worked out free-agency wise, credit Donnie for a very good draft. We’ll see how good tomorrow at UNLV. MSG Network will do the game, with Mike Breen going from The Finals to summer-league.

David Lee will appear in Las Vegas with the U.S. Olympic Team mini-camp July 23 but is not expected to participate in scrimmages if he doesn’t have a contract, according to a source.
