Kevin Durant’s mom, Wanda, is speaking out following her son’s devastating Achilles injury during Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night.
Sitting down with “Good Morning America,” Wanda revealed her son is “having a rough time” now but knows he’ll be OK.
“When it happened, I just kind of sunk,” Wanda said, recalling the moment the Warriors forward went down in the second quarter.
“I was just glued on him, glued on his eyes to see how he was doing,” Wanda continued. “It’s still kind of hurtful to see the anguish in his eyes. He looked as though he felt dejected at that time.”
Durant, who scored 11 points in his return, was helped up by teammates on the court. Both Warriors and Raptors players also attempted to shut down jeers from fans following Durant’s injury.
“I talked with him about five to 10 minutes afterward,” Wanda recounted of getting in touch with her son. “He just told me not to cry, cause I know he works so hard. He just told me he was going to be OK and don’t worry.”
Amid questions surrounding Durant’s competitiveness, Wanda shut down trolls Tuesday with an emotional tweet and doubled down on “GMA.”
“Over the years, the last few years, there have been questions about who he is as a person,” Wanda said. “After they questioned him about an injury and faking an injury, using an injury for his benefit, I felt that was really harsh because that compromised or talked about his character, and his integrity and I know that’s not who my son is.
“I just wanted to let them know that I’ve been hearing all of your words for the last few years all the harsh, hurtful things that you’ve said about my son, but you really don’t know who he is.”
As for the support the Durants have received, Wanda is eternally grateful.
“We have complete gratitude,” she said.
Following his exit from Monday’s game, Durant flew to New York for an MRI exam.
