The Knicks still have 18 Garden games left before their regular-season finale versus Boston on May 16.
The Post has learned the franchise has kept in touch with state political leaders with hopes of expanding the maximum size of the crowd before season’s end.
The Knicks have staged four games with limited — but loud — fans since Feb. 23. The maximum under state guidelines is roughly 2,000 patrons (or 10 percent capacity).
According to the source, as vaccinations expedite, the Knicks are optimistic attendance numbers can at least double by mid-May’s finale. The Knicks also are in playoff position at the All-Star break, in fifth place, meaning postseason games could be added.
The Knicks could host their first playoff game since 2013 at the 19,400-seat Garden. The Knicks are 3-1 in games before their boisterous, chanting crowds. RJ Barrett remarked, “For 2,000 fans, they’re really loud.’’
A limited amount of fans have been allowed at Knicks games. William Miller“We are thrilled to have fans back at The Garden and, after the overwhelming response we’ve experienced, can’t wait to be able to welcome more of them back,’’ a Garden spokesperson told The Post. “We would not comment on our conversations with the state.”
Out of the break, the Knicks begin a four-game road trip Thursday in Milwaukee. The first Garden game is March 18 versus Orlando. Ticket-holders still are required to show proof of a COVID-19 test in the previous 72 hours.
The Garden has partnered with Northwell Health & Vault on COVID-19 testing to make the process easier.
