DETROIT — The Knicks received another Jalen Brunson ankle injury scare on Sunday.
With 2:54 left in the third quarter, Brunson was stripped by Dennis Schröder and stayed down, grabbing his lower right leg. He went to the locker room — the third time he’s left the floor in four games of this opening-round playoff series — but returned and scored 15 of his 32 points in the final 9:31 to help the Knicks prevail 94-93 over the Pistons in a Game 4 classic.
“Moments like that, you’ve gotta take a breath, you’ve gotta relax, you’ve gotta think what’s going on,” Brunson said. “And I realized that I just needed to readjust and I made sure I was mentally ready to go back into the game, ’cause I was going back into the game. There really wasn’t a doubt, regardless of if I was stumbling or not. That’s pretty much it.”
Brunson’s big fourth quarter continued his strong start to the postseason.
He has scored 12 points or more in the final period of the series in each game and became the first player in NBA postseason history to notch 30 points and seven assists in the first four games of a playoff series.
