The Knicks went to the G-League for center depth.
The team signed Dmytro Skapintsev to a two-way contract Saturday, giving Tom Thibodeau a big body for insurance with two of his centers on the injury report.
Skapintsev, a 25-year-old Ukranian, has been playing for the Westchester Knicks this season while averaging about 15 minutes and 4.3 points with 4.4 rebounds.
He debuted for the senior Knicks for a minute of garbage time of Saturday’s 130-111 loss to the Bucks.
“His size is terrific,” Thibodeau said. “He can pass the ball a little bit. Does a little bit of everything. Great communicator on defense. So we think he’ll be a good addition.”
Despite the endorsement, the expectation is Skapintsev is only on the roster for practice and emergencies.
Isaiah Hartentstein and Taj Gibson will likely remain the top two in the rotation — as Saturday reinforced despite Hartenstein grappling with early foul trouble (Hartenstein played 33 minutes, Gibson had 15).
Thibodeau has also said he’ll utilize Julius Randle or Josh Hart at center in a pinch.

Sims is expected to be out about another week with a sprained ankle, an injury sustained on the tipoff of Monday’s victory over the Lakers.
Robinson’s recovery timeline is a mystery.

Friday, Thibodeau stood by the original announcement of a re-evaluation in 8-10 weeks.
A source said Robinson suffered a fracture and the surgery included a screw insertion.

I think the front office has to do their due diligence on everything. So you just let the process play out.
“I don’t know exactly where it stands [with Robinson’s recovery]. What I understand is that in 8 to 10 weeks, he’s gonna be re-evaluated.”
On Friday night, Robinson wrote on Snapchat that he “hopes” he’s not out for the season.
Mitchell Robinson’s ankle injury removed one center from the Knicks’ rotation. APAfter a pro career overseas — which was briefly interrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine — Skapintsev broke out in Summer League for the Knicks.
He then signed an Exhibit 10 deal with New York before helping its G League club win the Winter Showcase in Orlando last week.
The Knicks waived Jaylen Martin, who was previously on a two-way deal, to create the spot to sign Skapintsev.
Since Skapintsev was so new and had just arrived from the Winter Showcase, Hartenstein said he didn’t realize — and wasn’t informed — about him.
He was confused when Skapintsev was checking into Saturday’s game.

He was pretty good,” Hartenstein said. “Funny, I thought he was changing. I didn’t know he was coming on. I thought it was Carson [Shanks], one of our scouts. He’s a tall guy. I thought he was putting on a jersey.”
