A chilling start to the Raptors-Spurs game on Sunday afternoon was a beautiful tribute to dead Los Angeles Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant.

Both the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs agreed that the winner of the tip-off would let the 24-second shot clock run out in honor of Bryant, who died on Sunday in a helicopter crash.

Bryant was 41.

The Raptors won the tip and shooting guard Fred VanVleet held onto the ball while allowing the clock to expire on their first possession. Seconds later, point guard Dejounte Murray also accepted a shot clock violation on behalf of the Spurs.

Bryant’s jersey number was 24 the second half of his career.

The symbolic gesture was met with a standing ovation and impassioned “Kobe” chants from the crowd at AT&T Center.

Bryant’s 13-year old daughter Gianna Maria Bryant was also among the five killed in the tragic crash, according to multiple reports. The chopper crashed amid foggy conditions. They were on their way to basketball practice at Bryant’s “Mamba Academy.”

The cause of the crash was yet to be determined.

Bryant is survived by his wife Vanessa and their three children, Natalia, 17; Bianka, 3; and newborn Capri Kobe Bryant, born just last June.
