Entering a crucial offseason, the Lakers need all the credibility they can get. This won’t help.
In an interview with The Mercury News, Warriors center Andrew Bogut ripped Los Angeles’ front office — led by team president Magic Johnson and GM Rob Pelinka — as liars for releasing him days before his contract became guaranteed last season.
“I took their word for that stupidly,” Bogut told the paper. “It’s part of the business. But it’s disappointing because I have two young kids and all that. I was stupid enough to take their word on something I shouldn’t have.”
Bogut explained that the Lakers did not want to fully guarantee a deal for him due to his lengthy injury history, but told him if he had stayed healthy that he would remain on the roster for the full season. The Lakers denied saying such a thing to the Mercury News, claiming it would “violate NBA rules.”
“I was basically lied to,” Bogut said.
Bogut, 34, would finish the 2018 season playing professionally in his native Australia.
“The Lakers told me I’d be there the whole year,” Bogut said. “They went against their word and waived me at the deadline. Whatever. That was their decision.”
While a lightly used veteran center on a different team would appear to be the least of the Lakers’ problems, Bogut’s accusations come as they are trying to convince stars that they should come to their franchise alongside LeBron James.
The credibility of Johnson and Pelinka has been called into question around the league following an offseason where they whiffed on Paul George and a failed, public push to acquire Anthony Davis at the trade deadline.
Bogut’s claim, while perhaps minor, is just one more obstacle for the team to overcome.
