LeBron James brought a championship back to Cleveland for the first time in 52 years, and now he’s saying that his work isn’t done.
After beating the Warriors in the NBA Finals, James and his Cavaliers had their championship parade in downtown Cleveland on Wednesday afternoon. James has a one-year, $24 million player option in his contract with the Cavs that he can pick up for next season, and he told cleveland.com that he has no intention of leaving.
“I love it here. I love being here. I love my teammates,” James told the website before he boarded a float. “Obviously my agent will take care of all the logistical things, but I’m happy. I’ve got no plans to go nowhere at this point.”
The 31-year-old from Akron, Ohio, won the NBA Finals MVP with outstanding performances in Games 5, 6 and 7, leading the comeback from a 3-1 series deficit. Odds are that he will still opt out of his current contract, but only to get a raise somewhere in the ballpark of $30 million for next season.
“This is the happiest time in my life right now,” James added.
Free agents can begin negotiating July 1 and can sign on July 7.
