Longtime NBA reporter Sekou Smith died Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
He was 48 years old.
Smith died after a battle with COVID-19, according to TMZ Sports.
“The NBA mourns the passing of Sekou Smith, a beloved member of the NBA family,” the league said in a statement. “Sekou was one of the most affable and dedicated reporters in the NBA and a terrific friend to so many across the league.”
After graduating from Jackson State University in 1997, Smith covered the Pacers writing for the Indianapolis Star. He also covered the Hawks while a writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
In 2009, Smith transitioned to TV, joining Turner Sports, where he worked as a reporter and an analyst for NBA TV and NBA.com.
Smith also was a fixture on NBA TV studio shows “Game Time” and “The Beat,” as well as creating and hosting a podcast and blog on NBA.com called “Hang Time.” His last podcast appearance was on Jan. 11.
“Sekou Smith was the very best of us,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski wrote on Twitter. “Smart. Funny. Unflinching. Full of good. A lot of days and nights on the road with him — Bubble, Finals, Olympics, wherever — and always this: Photos of his kids playing ball, or graduating, or leaving for college. Godspeed, my friend.”
Smith is survived by his wife Heather and children Gabriel, Rielly and Cameron.
